The most important thing to remember before putting any graphics on your page is to
upload the pictures to your directories first. If you see an image you like for a site and have obtained the creator's okay to use it, right click on the image to bring up a menu, and select "Save Picture...". NEVER indicate your source in the Image tag (more on this later.) as being from another website. It takes up a lot of bandwidth (kind of like the memory on your computer) for a browser to go to the site and find the picture to show on your site, and some people have to pay for each hit (visit) they get to their site.
Bottom line? It sucks royally for that other person and their server, not to mention the people accessing their site, and the people trying to see that picture on your site. Plus, since they have control over the pic that appears on your site (since you're loading it from their site), they can play a pretty awful prank on you. So play nice and download the pic onto your site first before you post it on your webpage!

or "Respecting Other People's Work"
Another thing to remember is that if you use someone else's images, be they background images, animated gifs, web buttons, etc,
give credit where credit is due. If you know the name of the person and the site where you got the image, state who the image is by, and put a link to the site on the page where you put the graphic. In a lot of cases, people supply images for free, and don't need you to ask for permission to use their images, but you should check on their site to see if it's okay to do so. Think of it as someone taking a painting or a story of yours and passing it off as their own. It's the same sort of deal.
Okay, with the etiquette rules aside, let's check out how to put images on your website.
